A Closer Look at Community Giving
Everything’s Pretty in Pink

In OneBeacon’s San Antonio, Texas office, October is a particularly special time of the year. It’s not because of Halloween (although they enjoy that holiday, too!). It’s because of their month-long support of breast cancer awareness, coinciding with the national campaign. This year, the team “pinked-out” the office throughout October with an ongoing menu of pink snack treats and employees dressed in pink clothing. Additionally, their “Thursday Jeans Days” let employees pay to wear jeans, with all the proceeds collected for a local nonprofit—WINGS (Women Involved in Nurturing, Giving and Sharing).

The San Antonio team has been directly touched by breast cancer, so fully embraced this opportunity to support colleagues and family battling this illness. Their local fundraising was matched by the OneBeacon Charitable Trust—and prompted a visit by the WINGS staff to personally thank OneBeacon. Hearing from these survivors and community-support leaders was a heartwarming finish to a most colorful campaign. So the next time you see pink, think of team San Antonio!

A Team Effort

Getting two people to agree on something can be a challenge. However, in our Plymouth, Minnesota office, it took no convincing for 50+ employees to agree to pack food kits for less fortunate youth. As our largest OneBeacon volunteer effort, these employees spent several hours on site at Feed My Starving Children in nearby Chanhassen. Founded in 1987, this organization packs meals especially formulated for malnourished children. Once packed, the kits are shipped to their partners around the world including orphanages, schools, clinics and feeding programs.

Working together, our Plymouth staff packed 129 boxes of food, which equates to nearly 28,000 meals or enough food to feed 76 children for a year. The group also learned how the food they packed would specifically benefit children in Nicaragua, enabling them to appreciate the impact of their service. They say “it takes a village” to succeed; in our case, it just took a well-intentioned team to help feed the hungry.

Tournament of Giving

As an industry, insurance professionals understand that our purpose is to help people in their time of need. That day-to-day focus naturally extends to community-giving opportunities. Perhaps because of this professional and charitable alignment, we especially appreciate working with our industry peers to support worthy causes.

For the past five years, our Orange County, California-based partners from Barney & Barney have organized a fund-raiser golf tournament through their charitable foundation. In 2016, the event proceeds benefited the Assistance League of Santa Ana and Mariposa Women & Family Center. Golfers from across Southern California came out to support and raise money for both organizations. And with all that California sunshine, this December event was once again a great success.

OneBeacon was well represented through seven West Coast employees from our International Marine Underwriters and OneBeacon Technology businesses. Besides playing a little golf, our team volunteered throughout the day, working at a hospitality tent on the 11th tee. Additionally, the OneBeacon Charitable Trust sponsored the event lunch.

We applaud Barney & Barney as well as our other producers that prioritize supporting those in need.

OneBeacon Scholarship Program

For the thirteenth consecutive year, OneBeacon recognized deserving high-school seniors with college scholarships. Sixteen $2,000 awards were distributed, including eight to OneBeacon employees’ children and eight to children of the company’s distribution partners. Winners were selected based on criteria such as academic record, leadership skills and participation in school and community activities.

OneBeacon’s scholarship program is managed by Scholarship Management Services®, a nonprofit scholarship program administrator, and is funded by the OneBeacon Charitable Trust.
